Mediaspree Berlin

Discover Berlin - with inspiring photos and wall art by Alexander Voss

An impression of the Mediaspree area in Berlin, with the nhow Hotel Berlin at Osthafen.

Here, on the Friedrichshain bank of the Osthafen, beats the heart of Mediaspree.

Coal tugs and cargo ships were still unloaded here until the 1990s.
Today, the former port and industrial site is considered a “prime piece” of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and the historic warehouse buildings are a popular location for fashion and media companies.

But there is more to the Mediaspree label than “just” the restructuring of the former Osthafen.
Basically, it is the buzzword for the entire urban development in the huge area between Jannowitzbrücke and Elsenbrücke, on both sides of the Spree.

Old industrial and commercial buildings, many of which have already fallen into a state of decay, are to be reconstructed, and numerous new buildings and entire neighborhoods are to be built in addition.

Many of these projects have already been realized or are under construction, and from the very beginning the settlement of creative companies has been encouraged (of course also with plenty of taxpayers’ money), for example in the conversion of the historic Eierkühlhaus for the German headquarters of Universal Music (2002).

But Mediaspree also means commercialization, gentrification, displacement – all these are effects that have been observed for years, and the criticism is correspondingly great (and sometimes fierce).

Gently interweaving evolved structures with the new, and balancing conflicting interests is and remains an extremely difficult task for those responsible.
Only the future will show whether this succeeds here, in the heart of young Berlin.

The shipwreck of the Dr. Ingrid Wengler is actually the testimony of a sad story, but in the meantime has become a real landmark.
