The bronze figure of the Little Mermaid was inspired by the fairy tale of the same name by the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen. She has been sitting here since 1913, gazing longingly out to sea.
On my first visit, I found the sculpture surprisingly small and inconspicuous. Among all the jostling selfie tourists, it seemed completely lost.
When I returned later that evening, rain had driven the hordes away. Heavy clouds were rolling in from the Baltic Sea, and now I was the only person far and wide.
And it was only in this atmosphere that the sculpture unfolded for me all its grace and beauty, and all the tragedy of the touching story of the Little Mermaid, who sacrificed herself for her lost love.
